Ask any charter captain in the Upper Peninsula where to catch walleye and Little Bay De Noc comes up fast. Bays de Noc, Little Bay and Big Bay together, have earned the nickname the Walleye Capital of the UP, and staying at Whitefish Lodge and Cabins puts you right on the water it happens on. We are lakefront in Rapid River, Michigan, with our own boat launch and dock, so your fishing day starts at your cabin door, not at a public ramp with a line of trailers.

Little Bay De Noc is widely known as the Walleye Capital of the UP, and our property sits right on it with a private boat launch and dock.

Why Bay De Noc walleye lodging works better here

A lot of Escanaba cabin rentals and Gladstone MI cabin rentals put you a drive from the water. Ours does not. Launch from our dock, run out to the drop-offs and weed edges where walleye stack up, and be back in time for lunch on the porch. If you are hauling a boat up from downstate, our launch means you skip the public ramp altogether. If you do not have a boat, the shoreline itself fishes well at dawn and dusk, and local guides out of Escanaba and Gladstone can take you out for the day.

When to fish Bay De Noc

Early summer is prime time as walleye move shallow to feed after spawn, and the bite stays strong through July and into August on warm evenings. Crawler harnesses, crankbaits, and jigs all work depending on the week; ask us when you check in and we will tell you what has been biting. Perch and smallmouth bass are also common catches on the same water, so it is a good trip even on a slow walleye day.

Where to stay

Book Whitefish Lodge for a bigger group, or one of our cabins on Little Bay De Noc for a smaller crew. Either way, every unit is steps from the dock. Clean your catch at the fire pit, cook it in the cabin's full kitchen, and fall asleep to the sound of water instead of a parking lot. For anyone searching Rapid River MI lodging or Upper Peninsula cabin rentals built around fishing, this is the setup we built for ourselves before we ever started renting it out.
